In the battle to become the “Netflix of digital books,” Scribd is taking its app to Amazon Kindle Fire tablets while updating its iOS and Android apps.

Scribd, hailed as the YouTube of documents and now trying to become the Netflix of digital books, has launched a Kindle Fire app.

Like its Android and iOS apps, the Kindle Fire app allows Scribd’s premium account holders to check out e-books from the company’s library of “100,000 +” titles that make up the backbone of Scribd’s fledgling e-book subscription service, which made its debut in October. At the same time, Scribd is updating its iOS and Android with new features, including more fonts, a night reading mode, and the ability to rate content within the app.

Scribd says that “more than 100,000 users have come to Scribd since October 1, 2013 seeking an app compatible with their Kindle Fire device.” According to the company, since its subscription service launched it’s had over 3 million mobile downloads, with the Scribd app used on “over 11M unique mobile devices in December 2013 alone.”

However, it didn’t say how many new premium subscribers, who pay $ 8.99 a month, it has added since launch. It also didn’t mention whether it had struck any new deals with publishers (those “100,000 +” titles only represent a tiny fraction of Amazon’s e-book offerings).

Other start-ups have launched digital book subscription services, including Oyster, which also advertises having 100,000 + titles in its library and charges $ 9.95 per month for its all-you-can-eat service. It’s unclear whether Amazon will launch one.

With its FreeTime Unlimited package, Amazon already has what amounts to a subscription service for kid-friendly content, so it doesn’t seem like that big of a stretch for it to expand into a subscription service for grown-up content.

Much like music subscription services, digital book subscription services will end up being very similar, with many of the same publishers agreeing to sign partnership deals with the leading services. Scribd has the advantage of having been around for a while and having a large user base, although that base was primarily interested in accessing its free content. Still, it has good brand recognition within the digital reading community.

At present, Scribd and other fledgling digital subscription operations don’t pose a threat to Amazon’s dominance in the e-book arena. But I suspect someone at Amazon will keep an eye on how many Kindle Fire users are downloading Scribd’s app.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire line caused a stir when it launched, undercutting the tablet competition and carving Amazon a nice little corner of the then-uncharted waters in the process. It now seems Jeff Bezos’s company is looking to do the same in the games console arena with its own Android gaming machine.

While rumours have previously circulated around an Amazon set-top box, the reality now seems to be that Amazon’s next “bigger than Kindle” product will fall somewhere between that and a home gaming console: An Android-powered gaming machine that also offers access to Amazon’s video streaming services, and presumably the likes of Netflix too.

According to “multiple sources” speaking to VG247, the Amazon box is “grey in colour, oblong in shape and with sharp edges”, not dissimilar to the original PlayStation. As for pricing, it’ll undercut the current next-gen PS4 and Xbox One offerings considerably at around £ 180 (though anyone expecting a similar experience from an Android-powered console at that price as that offered by the next-gen heavyweights might want to keep dreaming).

The prospect of set-top-boxes-come-gaming-consoles seem to be all the rage with the tech heavyweights at the moment. Just last week we heard rumour that the next major update to the Apple TV line would be a gaming-focussed one, allowing for iOS games to be played directly from the Cupertino company’s next wave of boxes. BASIC CONTROLS

All Kindle Fires come with Kindle FreeTime already installed. The app itself is free to use. Once opened, all content not placed in your child’s FreeTime account is blocked. That means no access to Facebook, YouTube or Netflix, if you don’t want your child to have it. You need a password to exit FreeTime.

You can also limit your child’s screen time by having access shut off after a specified amount of time. You can even specify how much of a certain kind of media your child can view. For example, you can give a child unlimited access to books, while limiting video and app usage to 30 minutes each.

Different time limits can be set for weekdays and weekends, and “curfews” can be set to keep kids from playing games after bedtime.

You can also require kids to read or use educational apps for a certain amount of time before unlocking other content.

SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE:

Again, the FreeTime app is free. Where you have to pay is to access Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited service.

Geared toward children ages 3 to 8, FreeTime Unlimited allows kids to download anything they want from its large library of kid-friendly apps, books and videos , largely without the help of an adult. It also suggests content that they might like based on what they’ve already downloaded. Parents get to walk away and not worry about what they’re up to.

But the suggestions are based on what’s already stored in your child’s account. I wish the app did a better job at filtering content based on a child’s age. My daughter, now 4, doesn’t need to be watching Batman cartoons or playing “Plants vs. Zombies.”

Amazon touts the service’s “all-you-can-eat” pricing, noting that it eliminates the need to negotiate with your kids what and how much content you’re willing to pay for. It also helps with buyer’s remorse. If your kids don’t find a book or app particularly entertaining, just delete it and let them find something else. Plus, it protects your wallet from kids who might not understand they’re spending real money on virtual toys.

Another plus: It strips out advertising included in other versions of the apps.

A single-child membership costs $ 3 per month for Amazon Prime members and $ 5 for others. If you want to set up separate profiles for multiple children, you can opt for a family membership, which costs $ 7 per month with Amazon Prime, or $ 10 without.

Although FreeTime Unlimited isn’t as intuitive as some of the apps on our family iPad, it didn’t take long for my daughter to figure out how to download books and apps on her own. She added so much content that it ate up all of the storage on my otherwise largely empty Kindle Fire.

In addition to being organized by form of media, the content is also indexed by character. My daughter can’t read the words “Apps,” “Books,” and “Video” yet, but she knows exactly who Elmo, Sponge Bob and Curious George are. FreeTime Unlimited makes it easy for her to find and download content featuring them.

The icons also are fairly large, which helps kids with small hands. The number of icons displayed on the screen can still be dizzying, which can make it tough for both children and adults to find what they’re looking for. There’s a search function, but most young kids would need an adult’s help for that.

– RANGE OF OFFERINGS:

Although most young kids aren’t particular when it comes to books and TV, I was disappointed by the quality of the offerings.

According to Amazon, more than half of the content available through the service is “educational.” Indeed, there were picture books by notable children’s authors such as Eric Carle and Chris Van Allsburg. But many of the books focused on TV characters such as Sponge Bob, Dora the Explorer and Scooby Doo – not exactly classic children’s literature.

The videos included a lot of Nickelodeon and PBS shows currently popular with small children. I appreciate the inclusion of classic “Sesame Street” and “Reading Rainbow” episodes I loved as kid.

The same videos are already offered free to Amazon Prime members, though. You don’t need FreeTime Unlimited, or even a Kindle, to watch them.

You do need FreeTime Unlimited and the Kindle Fire for the books and the apps.

For me, $ 3 a month is a small price to pay to keep my daughter’s account stuffed with content she likes, so she won’t notice that she can’t access potentially problem-causing apps such as YouTube and Netflix. The peace of mind that comes from knowing that she’s is not watching the zombie drama “The Walking Dead” is priceless.

Amazon’s knocking ? 25 off its Kindle Fire tablets this weekend. That means the retail giant’s Android-based slates now start at just ? 94 for an 8GB Kindle Fire HD, with the offer ending on Monday 20 January.

It’s ? 174 for a 16GB Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch – then add ? 30 to double the storage to 32GB, and the same again to go up to 64GB. I should point out there’s not a huge need for storage on a Kindle Fire because here in the UK you can only stream movies from Lovefilm, not download them.

If you’re after a larger slate for your in-bed movie watching, the 8.9-inch HDX starts at ? 304 including the discount, adding ? 40 for each storage upgrade, and the large HD is ? 154, having already lost ? 50 in an earlier price drop.

All those prices include ‘special offers’ – ads that appear when you’re not using the device. You can pay an extra ? 10 to get a model without these marketing intrusions.

To bag your quarter-century discount, just enter the code ‘MAYDAY25′ at the checkout. All Fires qualify for free delivery.

Are any of them worth your time? I’d say ? 94 for the smaller one isn’t bad at all, as long as you’re happy with your movie watching being restricted to Lovefilm and your apps selection not quite as extensive as normal Android (Amazon vets the apps you can download). Specs-wise it’s pretty similar to the ? 119 Tesco Hudl, which doesn’t suffer those restrictions.

If you’re going to spend more, however, the 16GB Nexus 7 is unbeatable value for ? 199. You can download movies, there are zillions of apps and its Full HD screen is superb. Apple’s iPad mini edges it for apps, but is far more expensive at ? 319.

Amazon says the offer celebrates being voted the “number one retailer for customer satisfaction over the Christmas shopping period for the seventh year running” in the ForeSee survey, which was actually released on 18 December – when it slashed ? 30 off Fires – but whatever. Amazon shaded John Lewis, Apple, M & S and Asda, with Ryanair bottom of the 40 sites measured.

Compal has received 90% of orders for Amazon Kindle - Astaire - News IT business

New Kindle Paperwhite announced at Rs 10999 - Times of India

Amazon has announced the new iteration of its front-lit e-reader, Kindle Paperwhite, in the Indian market. The WiFi-only version of the device is available at a price of Rs 10,999, while the 3G + WiFi version is priced at Rs 13,999. Pre-orders for the new e-reader start today on the company’s India website. The shipping for Kindle Paperwhite begins on February 4, 2014.

Kindle Paperwhite features new display technology with improved built-in light; a 25% faster processor and new touch technology with 19% tighter touch grid for better sensitivity. The e-reader also boasts of some new features such as Kindle Page Flip in-line footnotes, Freetime and Vocabulary Builder. The ereader now also offers Facebook and Twitter integration for sharing recommendations, highlighted sections and quotes.

As per the company, the new ereader offers higher contrast and better reflectivity for whiter whites and blacker blacks. The new Paperwhite weighs 206gm and offers a battery backup of 8 weeks on a single charge.

Kindle Paperwhite will be available offline across 250 retail outlets across India including Croma, Reliance Digital, E-Zone, UniverCell and Vijay Sales stores.

The company has stopped the sale of the older iteration of the Paperwhite on its India website.

Rumours about an Amazon-branded handset have continually popped up in recent years. It’s well-known that Amazon and HTC, for instance, are working on a line of Android handsets that’ll supposedly launch in 2014. However, other rumours have claimed that Amazon and Foxconn Technology Group also worked on a smartphone in 2012. The Kindle-branded device was supposedly meant to serve up Amazon Prime content.

The hearsay doesn’t end with Foxconn, though. The smartphone will supposedly boast six compact camera modules. Four of which are VGA cameras that’ll sit along the device’s four corners, enabling highly accurate 3D-gesture and eye-tracking control. There will also be a 13 – megapixel rear-facing camera and a huge 12-megapixel front-facing camera.

Other rumoured specs include a 3D display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and 4.7-inch display. While all that sounds fine and dandy, it’s important to remember that Amazon emphasised its bigger-than-Kindle device will allow it to deliver digital media to customers “in new ways and disrupt the current marketplace.”

Amazon’s recruitment invite seemed to tease a new, revolutionary, and innovative device rather than a smartphone. A Kindle smartphone, even if it’s decked out with 3D capabilities, wouldn’t likely deliver digital media in new ways. And it certainly would have to be revolutionary in order to de-throne Samsung from the No. 1 spot in the Android handset marketplace.

Cinnamon set-top box

Reports first claimed in April 2013 that Amazon was developing a set-top box that could stream video over the Internet.

The device, reportedly born under Amazon’s Lab126 division, was meant to rival Apple TV, Roku, and Google TV, and Bloomberg said it would launch in autumn 2013. Well, that timeframe has now passed. Still, rumours persist.

The Wall Street Journal claimed Amazon’s set-top box would be available for purchase during the run-up to Christmas 2013 so that children and adults alike could wake up and see a shiny, new video-streaming device under their trees. That didn’t happen.

Beyond release-date nonsense, The Wall Street Journal revealed the device’s platform will give the other set-top boxes a run for their money. Previously assumed to be a vehicle for the Amazon Prime video service, Amazon’s set-top box will reportedly have third-party apps and content from a variety of sources.

Amazon has allegedly met with developers about designing streaming media apps and games for the device, which currently goes by the codename Cinnamon. Those developers apparently had a mid-October deadline. That is, until AllThingsD claimed Amazon won’t launch its foray into the living room until 2014.

Amazon is now aiming for spring 2014. Other details, like price, haven’t been reported. However, if Amazon’s recruitment invite is indeed about a set-top box, we will know all the details within the coming months. After all, an Amazon set-top box would deliver digital media, and, if developed well enough, could disrupt the marketplace.

Android gaming console

There hasn’t been much talk about this as of late, but reports claimed in August 2013 that Amazon was working an Android-based console that would release by Black Friday (29 November). Like the Amazon set-top box, that didn’t happen.

The Amazon console was supposed to include a controller and work with Amazon’s digital library of Android apps. Amazon even showed off this bundle to anonymous developer, though equally-anonymous sources told various publications like GameBeat that they weren’t sure if Amazon considered the game console a serious product.

There’s not much else to go on here. It’s clear however that such a console would directly rival other Android-based consoles like Kickstarter darling Ouya, Mad Catz MOJO, and BluStacks GamePop. With such heavy competition, Amazon would really need to bring it in order to disrupt the marketplace. It might even sport a forked version of Android, much like its Kindle line of eReaders.

Prime Air drones

We don’t really think a drone is Amazon’s mystery, bigger-than-Kindle device, but it’s worth considering in a rumour round-up. Especially because Amazon itself revealed in December 2013 that it is testing Prime Air drones that can deliver packages to customers within 30 minutes after orders are placed.

Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon, revealed on CBS’s 60 Minutes that Amazon has developed prototypes of autonomous drones that can deliver a 5lb package up to 10 miles away from an Amazon warehouse. Amazon has 96 warehouses scattered across the US.

Bezos said the drones could take to the air within the next few years, though the US Federal Aviation Administration hasn’t approved their official use yet. In fact, the FAA can’t even change its regulations to accommodate the drones until 2015 at the earliest, according to Bezos. So, for now, Amazon is still testing the reliability and safety of its drones.

Amazon’s mystery device is in the development stage and will be able to deliver digital media. Although Amazon’s drones are in testing and can make deliveries, it seems unlikely that Amazon is talking about them. Autonomous drones can certainly deliver media, but we’re safely assuming they’ll carry physical orders rather than digital.

Amazon launches new Kindle Paperwhite in India, available from February 4 ... - BGR India

Amazon has launched the new Kindle Paperwhite in India. It will be available from February 4 starting from Rs 10,999 for the Wi-Fi only version and Rs 13,999 for the Wi-Fi + 3G version, which is the same price as the previous generation Kindle Paperwhite.

The next-generation Kindle Paperwhite brings a new display technology with higher contrast, an improved display light and a faster processor. Other improvements include a new touch technology that Amazon claims improves touch sensitivity and accuracy. A new feature called Free Time lets parents make some titles from their library available to their kids and they can track their progress.

Due to its compact size and the fact that it does not require a keyboard or mouse, it is ideal for traveling and mobility in general.

Overall, tablets are a combination of cellular phones and computers. Just like phones, they have built in cameras, microphones and keyboards. Additionally they have touch screens that work just like a cell phone, but are bigger, more like a laptop. Tablets have risen in popularity over the past few years, as their user friendly interfaces have improved. Users tend to enjoy having such a device, even if they have a smartphone and a computer. Tablets are found to be easily interchangeable with both of these devices, making going from place to place (even in the same house) a breeze. Many users enjoy using game applications on a tablet a lot more than on a small screen on a cell phone and find that using their fingers is a easier than a mouse and keyboard.

Into Space

The newer edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note was released in October of 2013. This new version has much more to offer than previous makes. In general, consumers have chosen this device over others because of its ChatON function. This enables features in My Page, which allows users to make a personal profile and create group chats. Within these group chats, one is able to send texts, pictures, videos and audio files. Whatever files have been transported are automatically saved to one’s Trunk.

New Interface

The 10.1 2014 update of the Samsung Galaxy Note came equipped with a customized version of the software TouchWiz UX. With this new interface, users are able to use applications more properly, such as Google Play, Gmail and YouTube. To enhance its user friendliness, the Note comes with a stylus that opens even more abilities. The pen is able to create additional applications that open up the Air Command menu. This provides shortcuts to additional applications like the Action Memo. Action Memos are more commonly known as sticky notes, much like on a computer, but these are much more interactive. When writing in an Action Memo, it is able to recognize handwriting and see key words that enable Google Maps searches or even phone number dialing.

Comparing Fire to Stars

The Kindle Fire HDX is the next step up following the Kindle Fire HD. The primary differences between these two devices include a better processor, more RAM, is LTE compatible, a microphone and a front facing camera. Even though the Kindle has almost one gigabyte of RAM less than the Note, it does not affect the primary function of the device. Generally, customers buying the Kindle are looking for an e-book friendly device and are less concerned with games and internet compatibility. While the Note is able to connect to a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, the Fire HDX is able to use a 4g connection.

Overall, the choice comes down to what the consumer is looking for. If the individual is using the tablet or business, games or general internet use, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is the better option. If one is looking for a device to read, or watch movies and videos, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX is more plausible.

Kindle Fire HDX 7 "Tablet: Specs, News, and First Impressions - Latin Post

The Kindle Fire HDX 7 “tablet is Amazon’s answer to the Nexus July 2 and iPad Mini with Retina Display. The 7″ slate features the best of Amazon. With access to Kindle books and magazines, movies, games and more the HDX is clearly positioned as a media consumption device. Its heavily modified Android interface may strike fear in the heart’s of Android traditionalists, but it’s a pleasure to use. And at a starting price of just $ 229 it costs the same as the Nexus 7 February. The iPad Mini with Retina Display weighs in a $ 399. All begin with 16gb of storage.

Rather than opting for Android’s pre-installed Chrome web browser, Amazon created their own version called Silk. The Silk browser intelligently utilizes Amazon’s wide network of servers, or the cloud, to help the HDX’s CPU load web pages faster. This time-saving feature is unique to Amazon’s HDX line of tablet’s. The server-side processing can be turned off as well; not everybody likes to have all their activity tracked and delivered to Amazon’s algorithms.

Much like the iPad requires an Apple ID and the Nexus requires a Google Account, an Amazon account needs to be created in order to use the HDX 7. The nice thing about having the HDX tied into your Amazon account is that any media you purchase through Amazon.com will be available on both your computer and tablet. An Amazon account also provides the largest and cheapest selection of books on the web. So whether you’re a voracious reader with a gaming streak or a film both who likes to settle down with a good novel, the HDX will serve your needs well.

In terms of build quality the HDX 7 fares pretty well. Its taut, plastic build quality feels good in the hands and is markedly similar to the Nexus 7 February. Yet the inclusion of plastic means that it isn’t as pricey as the iPad’s aluminum enclosure. Nor is it as durable. However, if you slap on a case and avoid drops, spills, slips and falls with the tablet in tow you’ll be fine. The back of the device features a matte black finish with tapered edges on the bezel side to fit comfortably in your hand.

Compared to Nexus’ Google Play store and Apple App store, the HDX doesn’t feature as many apps, but you shouldn’t find the selection lacking. The HDX’s app selection also isn’t nearly as barren as a Windows 8.1 “RT tablet like the Surface. Popular productivity app Evernote made its way onto Amazon’s Appstore meaning that you can get a little work done with your HDX. Of course, Hulu and Netflix are available to install as well. Gaming is a thrill thanks to the Kindle HDX’s greater than high-definition (1920 by 1200) display and responsive touchscreen.

So overall you may think this HDX 7 is a slick tablet, but so what; the iPad Mini with Retina and Nexus 7 February aren’t too shabby themselves. How does Amazon manage to differentiate their offering from their California rivals? The answer is shipping.
