company, a developer of software for displays DisplayMate conducted a comparative test of three models of the characteristics of screens: iPad Air, Amazon Kindle Fire HDX and Google Nexus 10. Comparison with the Nexus 10 is not so important, because it is last year’s model, and soon everyone is expected to release the next generation. But the Kindle Fire HDX – that is the latest device and a direct competitor to iPad Air. DisplayMate experts conducted a series of in-depth testing, diagnosing the brightness, contrast, color accuracy, viewing angles, and much more.

Display iPad Air, compared to the iPad 4 shows “not revolutionary, but very significant” improvements: reduced reflectivity, increased brightness and contrast. This is due to non-use of amorphous silicon and the transition to technology IGZO (the first letters of the elements: indium, gallium and zinc). According to experts DisplayMate, new technology has become “the most important improvement” iPad Air and secured 57% increase in energy efficiency compared to the previous generation iPad. Screen Kindle Fire HDX produced by different technology: LTPS (Low-Temperature Poly-Silicon). The same technology and are manufactured screens iPhone, however, only applies Amazon displays it in large size. Energy Efficiency LTPS-screen display gives iPad Air, but by other parameters fixed experts DisplayMate superiority Kindle Fire HDX.

Most impressive is the screen Kindle Fire HDX. He became the most effective display of all that we’ve ever tested, significantly surpassing iPad Air in brightness and reflectance. Additionally Kindle Fire HDX showed greater contrast in light and received the highest score in the most difficult categories: absolute color accuracy.

The table summarizes the final assessments and shows that the iPad Air slightly inferior competitor. More detailed data in tables and graphs can be viewed at DisplayMate.

However, souped iPad Air owners do not be upset, and these tests are certainly not a reason to give up in favor of the iPad Air Kindle Fire HDX. It is not the fact that the average user will be able to notice the difference that professionals from DisplayMate called “significant.” And they themselves write:

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 and Apple iPad Air are both impressive products, because apart from the high level of performance they show superior image quality, color accuracy and contrast. According to these parameters both the tablet far superior not only counterparts, but most desktop displays, monitors, laptops and TVs. With some calibration settings can both qualify as exemplary studio monitors.

At the end of his report DisplayMate experts noticed that it was very nice to test the products of the highest quality. How many people will be glad of this information is unknown, Apple did not publish official data on the sales of iPad Air on the first weekend after the launch, currently only available forecasts. Perhaps that many even more interested in how will reveal itself iPad Mini Retina in similar tests. Given the emergence of Retina, changes from the previous model should be even more significant. Wait is quite a bit.
